The Basics of Cat Care

Cat care does not amend over time. Kittens require additional levels of care and husbandry as they age. Owners of cats must be on guard for disease, diet, sleep patterns, overall health and provide adequate shelter and resources for the cat to grow and thrive. But cat care is not limited to basic food and living space. A healthy cat merits much more in the way of cultivation of a healthy play mentality and physical development.

Cats were worshiped by the Ancient Egyptians as part gods, regarded throughout Western history as familiars to sorcery and witches. Their mysterious and abstracted visual and behavioral aesthetics have spurred endless comparisons in song, literature and poetry. Cats function as excellent companions and respond to verbal commands and act as intelligent and humorous adjuncts to single resident or family living.

Cats need constant attention and reasonable play time as they develop. Exposure to disease and small pests can increase chances of tick or flea borne disease, and cats can catch colds and suffer from biological infections just like humans. The sleep cycle of a cat varies but is so short that cats roam at night. While not strictly night time animals, cats nap during the day often and pick up on sleep during protected patterns of relaxation, defining the word “catnap”.

Kittens eat smaller meals and require assistance in cleaning and living area limitation while small. As kittens grow, the mother (if present) leaves off grooming and feeding functions. Domestic cat care should include veterinary visits, spaying and neutering, vitamin therapy, a well rounded diet, and limited excess calories and non nutritious cat food.

Cat care includes cat dentistry and physical veterinary examinations on a twice yearly or at worst annual basis. Cats can have tumors, cancers, and malaise not related to diet and exercise. Cat care includes careful attention to optical health. Dental examinations, oral administration of medication, and brushing encourage cats to lead healthy lives and make them feel cared for. Cats are attentive and responsive to attention by their owners and cat care includes play times and exercise, not just feeding and allowing them to sleep.

Animal husbandry today revolves mostly around home life. Cat care in the modern home means staying vigilant as to cat diet, allergies, and shedding and scratching of home furnishings. Cats enter seasonal reproductive cycles which alter their behaviors and cat owners should alter their care accordingly. Cats should be kept within home premises to prevent unwanted reproductive activity.

Conventional cat ownership and cat care products have developed exponentially over the past decade. Custom cat shampoos for a healthy coat, luxury cat food, pet leashes, custom cat sweaters and other accessories and toys can be bought in pet stores and online at cat care websites. Special cat care toys and additional companionship is advised if travel or vacation plans interrupt normal cat care and home life. Travel with cats in cars and most airlines requires standardized cat carriers.

Pets today are one of the family, and cat care should increase as a cat ages. Changes in nutritional intake should reflect the level of dietary cat care advised by the veterinarian. Cat toys with special features to encourage cat play can be purchased to employ with your cat if they are feeling overly somnolent or not getting enough exercise.

Litterbox health is an essential part of any domesticated animal and cat care. Keep their litter box as clean as possible. Be sure to sanitize the container with each major cleaning. Cats need fresh water free of bacteria and contamination daily. Cat baths are necessary for cat care, especially if fleas are an imposing concern. Shelters and animal pounds are the best places to intelligently source pets for amusement, love, and companionship.

Animal mistreatment has always troubled me. It looks like it is getting worse, at least where I live. But there are still positive people out there who feel like I do that we must take care of them. I hope the legal system will match up with our means of believing about this. It is still processed as a comparatively petty criminal offense. That’s wrong.
